Exporting FE mesh in igs format

Exporting FE mesh in igs format

Exporting FE mesh in igs format

(OP)
My understanding is that igs format is only for CAD data and not for FE model.
But i just need to know, is there any possibility to export mesh to igs format.

RE: Exporting FE mesh in igs format

Depends on the FEA software you're using.

Short answer is "Yes", there are many FEA applications that can convert a FEA mesh (triangular and quadrilateral elements for example) into "surfaces" and "vertices", and export this as IGES or other similar CAD formats.

Note however that unless you have some pretty powerful "geometry cleaning" tools, you will end up with a separate surface for each plate element, rather than a single surface for all elements which lie in a common plane, for example.

RE: Exporting FE mesh in igs format

Hello,
IGES is a neutral file format defined by ANSI for exchange of CAD data across heterogeneous systems. Till I know the IGES standard does not support mesh exchange.

But in FEMAP V11 you can export your mesh using "FILE > EXPORT > GEOMETRY > Stereolithography (*.stl)" command. The stereolithography file is only applicable for a meshed model. FEMAP will export a faceted representation of your model using the FEA mesh as the basis of this file.

FEMAP will ask you to select the elements to be translated. You will usually want to pick plane element types for this command, solids may be selected as well.. If you have quadrilateral plane elements, FEMAP will still write the triangular facets by first splitting these quads. This splitting procedure does not modify the elements themselves. FEMAP simply writes the triangular results to the STL file. If you choose solid elements, FEMAP will write each face as a triangular facet, splitting quadrilateral faces when required. If any plane elements are coincident with the face of solid elements, only one of these faces will be exported. Any line elements that are chosen in this procedure are simply ignored.

Hope it helps!.
Best regards,
Blas.
