Material SA 494 M35-1 (MONEL)
Material SA 494 M35-1 (MONEL)
(OP)
Hi everyone,
Why does not appear the material SA 494 M35-1 in ASME II Part-D? However, it is in ASME II - Part B...
I need to justify its use for a pressure vessel according to ASME VIII Div.1.
Thanks in advance.

You are right, this material appears in the code case 1750. But how can I know its stress limits in order to justify its use?
Many thanks.

What I thought is that following the indications of each code case, would be enough to apply it. In this particular case, the code case only shows the maximum design temperature, pressure and size. Therefore, I didn't understand how to calculate the design of a pressure vessel.
Frankly speaking, I am a bit lost concerning the code cases. Any aditional information would be appreciated.
Thank you!

I would suggest you locate an ASME Section VIII, Div 1 code book and review "Submittal of Technical Inquiries to the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Committee - Mandatory Appendix 16 or at the front of the book for the 2011 edition of Section VIII, Div 1.
16-4 CODE CASES
Requests for Code Cases shall provide a Statement of
Need and Background Information similar to that defined
in 16-3(b) and 16-3(c), respectively, for Code revisions or
additions. The urgency of the Code Case (e.g., project
underway or imminent, new procedure, etc.) must be
defined and it must be confirmed that the request is in
connection with equipment that will be ASME stamped,
with the exception of Section XI applications. The proposed
Code Case should identify the Code Section and
Division, and be written as a Question and a Reply in the
same format as existing Code Cases. Requests for Code
Cases should also indicate the applicable Code Editions
and Addenda to which the proposed Code Case applies.

I really appreciate your interest for this thread. Let me tell you that what you are indicating me is in case of a "new code case", but in this case the material A494 M35-1 already appears in the existing code case 1750. According to the ASME VIII Div.1 about code cases, once a material has been introduced as a code case, everyone is allowed to use it, just following the indications thereof.
That's what I wanted to do, but my request was how to justify the design of a PSV if I do not know where I can find the stress limits of this material since they do not appear neither in the ASME II-Part D nor in the Code Case 1750.
Thanks!

If there is another way to justify the flange thickness of the bonnet, please, let me know.
Thanks!
