Pl. clarify the exact Dim standard (ASME CODE) for Studs to be used for ASME B16.5 Flanges

Pl. clarify the exact Dim standard (ASME CODE) for Studs to be used for ASME B16.5 Flanges

Pl. clarify the exact Dim standard (ASME CODE) for Studs to be used for ASME B16.5 Flanges

(OP)
Can anybody give me a clear picture of what is the ASME code for Studs to be used in compatible to ASME B16.5 FLANGES?

I am confused because,
If we consider studs, the ASME standard is B18.31.2 for imperial and ASME B18.31.1M for Metric
If we consider Bolts, the ASME standard is B18.2.1 for imperial and ASME B18.2.3 for Metric

But in “Piping Handbook (7th Edition) By: Nayyar, Mohinder L. © 2000 McGraw-Hill”
Chapter 2 - Design Basis, Page B.25, Table B2.2b does not illustrate the standard for Studs.

Request your help in this regards
Thanks
Kulasera

A Handbook is just what it is, a Handbook. The code that you are building to should provide the answer you are looking for.

If you use B16.5 flanges, itll tell you all info on studs (e.g. length), nuts and thread.
However, as B16.5-2009 para 6.10 (esp. 610.1) points out;

Quote:

Stud bolts, threaded
at both ends or threaded full length, or bolts may be
used in flange joints. Dimensional recommendations for
bolts, stud bolts, and nuts are shown in Table 1C.
the word may indicates a recommendation, not a requirement. So, you're free to choose thread type, studlength, etc.
Please bear the B16.5 provided length for stud often is on the small (yet Code compliant), so if you need more thread engagement than 1 thread only, you have to hand calc some stud lengths yourselves.

Table 1C quotes ASME B18.2.1 for all types of bolts and B 18.2.2. for all types of nuts.

I agree with XL83NL, the lenghts in 16.5 are usually a little on the short side and normally I used to add 10 - 15mm to all their standard lengths

My motto: Learn something new every day

Also: There's usually a good reason why everyone does it that way

Thanks for all your suggestions and comments.
I would conclude that ASME B16.5 depicts the compatible fastener for the flanges and ASME B18.2.1 and ASME B18.2.2 provides the dimensional standard for the bolt and nut.
