ICF Waffle Grid Wall Design

ICF Waffle Grid Wall Design

What are most people using for the design of ICF Walls when they fall outside the Prescriptive limitations of the IRC and HUD guidelines?

I have run into my first project that is outside the prescriptive requirements for ICF design given by the IRC and HUD.

RE: ICF Waffle Grid Wall Design

No certified lab testing indoor from the ICF manufacturer?

The manufacturers information basically mirrors the IRC's information.

I thought that PCA had some Structural procedures for ICF walls, but I couldn't find the book. I would think there would be some design guidance other than the prescriptive stuff somewhere.

RE: ICF Waffle Grid Wall Design

Several documents/sources maybe helpful
CFA: 2010 CFA Standard
CFA Technical Note 008-2010

ACI 332 & 318

PCA:
PCA-100 "Prescriptive Design of Exterior Concrete Walls for One- and Two-Family Dwellings"
RD134 "Concrete Consolidation and the Potential for Voids in ICF Walls" (every mfg and dealer/distributor fails to recognize what slump means and why!)
"Insulating Concrete Forms", Pieter A. VanderWerf, et.al., Published by PCA, McGraw Hill, 1997

USDHUD:
"Prescriptive Method for Insulating Concrete Forms in Residential Construction"
"In-Plane Shear Resistance of Insulating Concrete Form Walls"
"Lintel Testing for Reduced Shear Reinforcement in Insulating Concrete Form Systems"
"Testing and Design of Lintels Using Insulating Concrete Forms"

PATH: PRESCRIPTIVE METHOD FOR INSULATING CONCRETE FORMS IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION

Great! Thank you. Didn't see this when I posted the other one. Didn't appear many users use this section so I thought I may try a different one. Again, thank you for the info.

RE: ICF Waffle Grid Wall Design

Forgot one biggie:
"Structural Design of Insulating Concrete Form Walls in Residential Construction", Prepared by NAHB Research Center, Inc. 1998, published by PCA: PCA R&D Serial #2164.

Cool. I think that may be exactly what I'm looking for.

RE: ICF Waffle Grid Wall Design

If the wall is a older "waffle" grid system instead of the more common systems using separate flat parallel EPS forms tied with structural ties for forming purposes, it may not apply to the referenced standard because of the continuous EPS ties connecting the face shell since the wbs form a discontinuity of the concrete portion of the walls and a totally different structural load resistance.

Of course, the structural analysis applies to he concrete portion of the walls and not the finished in-place wall exterior dimension since the EPS is is just a non-structural form. Usually, the structural portion of the wall is 2" or more less than the exposed thickness.

It's the newer style ICF forms.
