If you have a custom view that is oriented in a specific orientation, how can you make its projected views update automatically when you have a model change to the base view?

You can rmc on the view and click on Update
There are a couple other things you can do to update the views on the drawing, which includes a toggle to have it automatically done, but I am not at work right now to tell you correctly how to do it.

Maybe try Help (pull down menu) -> Command Finder, and then enter update drawing views
and see what results it gives you

Edit -> Views -> Update views
In your part navigator you can click on the view in the drawing, or the drawing itself, and Update
Or for automatic updating of the drawing views:
Preferences -> Drafting Preferences -> Views -> uncheck Delay View Update

Do you mean that you have changed the orientation of the base view and now you want the projected views to updated based on the change to the base view? If so, I don't think that is currently supported. Once the view is created, it is independent of other views (i.e. there is no parent-child relationship between views).

I think that is exactly what he is asking for. Why isn't the projected view a "child" to the base view, it makes sense that it would stay associative to the view it was created from... Along with this line of thinking, when you create a base view with a custom model view and then you need to save the model view in a new orientation why does the drafting view not keep this associativity?

correction:
there is no parent-child relationship between projected views and base views
One could argue that section views and detail views have such a relationship to their parent views.

I have no insider knowledge of how and why NX works the way it does, but I will say that associativity is a double-edged sword. Yes, there are times that such associativity between views would be handy. However, let's imagine your drawing is almost done and it contains dozens or hundreds of dimensions and annotations. Even a small change to the base view could break the associativity of most (possibly all) the dimensions and other assorted annotations.

Also, let's not forget that UG/NX is over 30 years old; in the early versions, I doubt the 3D models had much associativity - let alone the drawing views. It may be that in the early days, view associativity wasn't thought of or there was an architectural limitation and NX simply developed along that trajectory.

That said, if you would like to see it in a future version - contact GTAC and open an enhancement request (ER).

Note that there is an option, when creating a Projected view, to define a 'Hinge' line which can be done so in an Associative manner which means that if the orientation of the Base view is modified that the Projected view will update in an attempt to maintain the projected relationship relative to the hinge line. Normally the 'Hinge Line' is 'Inferred' but the 'Vector Option' can be changed to 'Defined' and then you are able to select whatever 'vector' you wish to use, including edges/faces/curves/points from the model itself, in which case this will create an associative projection. Note that you MUST define these 'Defined' Hinge Lines at the time the Projected views are being created as they cannot be 'edited-in' later on.
