I was wondering if there was a journal command to update for external change.

Are you doing this simply because you want to avoid having to navigate to the function via the...

Tools -> Update -> Update for External Change

...menu sequence?

If so, perhaps you were unaware that you can use Customize and assign any menu item to an icon on a toolbar so that you can execute the function with a single gesture.
