Choosing material for liquid sulphur handling

Choosing material for liquid sulphur handling

Choosing material for liquid sulphur handling

(OP)
We are choosing material for a valve for our customer handling liquid sulphur in his plant. Please advise whether normal 316L is sufficient for the same. Is NACE requirement mandatory for liquid sulphur? This is a new requirement for us and we just want to make sure that 316L (1.4404) would not react/ deteriorate in sulphur medium.

Also we would like to know any other important factor that has to be considered while choosing material for sulphur/ H2S or similar sour media

RE: Choosing material for liquid sulphur handling

Usually ductile or steel is used to handle pure molten sulfur even in pumps- lots of references after all its the basis of sulphuric acid production. Is there an external or internal reason to use 316L?

RE: Choosing material for liquid sulphur handling

Carbon steel pipe and carbon steel valves with 12% Chrome trim or 316 trim has been used for decades for molten sulfur tranport.
