output of gap elements in Abaqus CAE

output of gap elements in Abaqus CAE

Hi,

RE: output of gap elements in Abaqus CAE

(OP)
I have to model gap elements on a quarter of a cylindrical surface using Abaqus CAE; the gap elements are associated with a pressure-overclosure exponential relationship.
CAE does not explicitly support gap elements, so I edited the commands and inserted manually the *GAP and *SURFACE INTERACTION in the *PART field. Is it sufficient to model the pressure-overclosure relationship or do I have to write a specific command in the *STEP field as well? How can I get in Abaqus Cae a plot for the pressure and clearance results on the gap elements?
Thank you.

Hi, thank you for your quick answer. I realised I have not been precise in the definition of the problem: I have to model the interaction between a rigid cylinder and the deformable body in which the cylinder is stuck. Initially, there is a gap between the body and the upper part of the cylinder; since the body is loaded at its boundaries, the gap deforms. In order to contrast the gap closure, the gap is filled with a fluid whose pressure depends on the gap clearance. That is the reason for which I need a gap contact element...
I warmly thank you if you have any suggestion on how to write the command in CAE..
Regards.

Hi,
thank you very much for your interest.
For the abovementioned problem I do agree with you, non-linear springs would be sufficient to simulate the interaction.
I would anyway like to use gap contact elements in order to understand how they work, since in the future I will
have to substitute the deformable body with a granular material in which the fluid will penetrate causing
overclosure between the surfaces.
Reading the manual I found that element-based contact problems which use gap elements are able to simulate
overclosure. My problem now is to use them in Abaqus CAE, do you know if it is possible or how this could work?
Thank you very much,
Best regards
M.

RE: output of gap elements in Abaqus CAE

It seems you misunderstand me. Let me try again:

Gap element is a nonlinear spring. FE developers do not recommend using gap elements any longer; it was their initial attempt at modeling contact.

Whatever else you seem to be interested in modeling can be done using contact.
