Weldable steel

Weldable steel

How do I determine if existing structural steel is weldable? The project is from 1955 and the column size is W10x49. I can't find the material properties (fy, f'c etc) in the existing drawings.

Thanks.

RE: Weldable steel

A column in a 1955 building would be weldable. What does f'c have to do with a steel column?

hokie, thanks. I guess I was pointing out that there are no material properties listed, steel or concrete.

RE: Weldable steel

Probably A7 steel, given the date.

RE: Weldable steel

If you are concerned find a spot to clean off and drill and have the material analyzed. Odds are low C and decent chemical balance, should weld fine.

RE: Weldable steel

My 5th edition AISC Manual (copyright 1947) indicates in Section 9 of the Specification that structural steel shall conform to ASTM A7. For ASTM A7 material, Fy = 33 ksi.

RE: Weldable steel

Collector's edition of the Manual?

RE: Weldable steel

We were using 33ksi yield back then. History here.
