Corrosion Potential Assistance

Corrosion Potential Assistance

(OP)
I am attempting to determine the corrosivity of a soil on a steel pipe and am having trouble finding anything that can give me a straight forward answer such as moderately susceptible or significantly susceptible. I have resistivity and pH so I think I am making this a harder thing then it needs to be I just know very little about steel. I was hoping if someone could point me in the right direction.

RE: Corrosion Potential Assistance

There is actually a lot in that, but simple guidelines as far as soil resistivity to corrosivity in the table below

Soil resistivity (ohm cm) Corrosivity Rating
>20,000 Essentially non-corrosive
10,000 to 20,000 Mildly corrosive
5,000 to 10,000 Moderately corrosive
3,000 to 5,000 Corrosive
1,000 to 3,000 Highly corrosive
<1,000 Extremely corrosive

pH has less effect on the corrosion of steel, assuming you are in the normal range, and not some strange unusual area or set of circumstances.

Soil texture has an effect on corrosivity, in that it effects diffusivity of gases and soluble salts
