COLD SERVICE

COLD SERVICE

(OP)
Hy All

M currently working in a cold service project.....I understand fairly that you need a cold service qualified wps for work on any cold service piping, but i wana make a scenario to ask my question clearly....

Say I Have to fabricate a section of a line Stainless steel pipe, Design pressure: 2000kpa Design Temp: -109 Degrees celcius.
I know that u cant use a wps thats qualified on -45 deg celc atleast you must use -196 Degrees celcius.

Can a welder qualified on -45 be allowed to weld my line?
Given the process to be used, filler, thickness range, F-No and all required qualification are within.

Do I need to requalify him at -196 to meet the full requirements to weld the above mentioned pipe?

Best Regards.

RE: COLD SERVICE

What is your design Code, and what does it tell you?

RE: COLD SERVICE

In general, the intent of welder qualification is to demonstrate that a welder can make sound welds with a specific welding procedure. The fracture toughness, corrosion resistance, or any other inherent property of the weld will have been determined in qualification of the welding procedure specification. Requalification of the welder will only be required if the new application requires a WPS that takes the welder outside of the essential variables of their qualification, defined in the welding standard being applied, or when the end user's specification demands it.
