Need 1045 Tubing Stock

Need 1045 Tubing Stock

Need 1045 Tubing Stock

(OP)
I am trying to locate 1045 tubing with OD's of 3"-14" with a variety of wall thicknesses.
I can find companies (LTV Copperweld for example) that will make it for me.  However 4 month lead times and 5000' minimums are not an option.
Does anyone know where this tubing may be stocked?

RE: Need 1045 Tubing Stock

Did you ask Copperweld which distributors they sell to? They may stock it.

RE: Need 1045 Tubing Stock

You need to look at service centers or distributors, not tube manufacturers.  Jorgensen would be my first choice-- lots of selection, and I know that 1045 is available as seamless tubes.  Their website is http://www.emjmetals.com/emjonline/index1024.htm

Other places to look, which include some large and small distributors:

Thanks for the tip on Jorg. they have 4 sizes in stock.
I've checked all kinds of distributors & service centers.  Jorgensen is the only one I've found that stocks it.  The other companies listed above do not.  I know that tube manufacturers is a last resort, but I think I'm there.

RE: Need 1045 Tubing Stock

I don't recall ever seeing 1045 as tube. I checked EMJ, Corus, and Castle's literature and none of them list it as a tube material. Does it have to be 1045? I would have thought the high carbon content would make 1045 undesireable for most applications other than shafting. Would 4140, which is readily available, work as well for your application?

RE: Need 1045 Tubing Stock

4140 would work but it is costly compared to 1020, 1026 etc.
We currently use 1045 solid stock, bore out about 80% and cut threads for bolts around the perimeter.
I want to switch to tubing to save time and money but the threads strip out in low carbon tubing.
So I'm testing thread-forming taps - sizes over M14 are hard to find and expensive.  I need holes up to M20.  Additionally, some components are stress relieved so they don't distort when split.  If I stress relieve a thread-formed hole I lose the benefit of thread-forming.
The easiest fix is to cut threads in 1045 tubing, but ...back to the top.???
