Rectangular Launder Design
Rectangular Launder Design
(OP)
I'm often asked to design steel to support slurry-filled open channel launders without being given anything but drawings of the launder. I never really know how full the launder is, but I usually have a P&ID with the flow rate. I'd like to get a feel for how full the launder will be. How are open channel launders typically designed? The Manning Equation? Or is there more to it than that? Any good references out there?

RE: Rectangular Launder Design
The launder should be designed to carry the full flooded weight of the launder. Consider the scenario where the launder is full (full of solids) and the tank drains. Is this scenario possible?
There is usually an adjustable weir attached to the top of the launder to ensure equal flow from all tank areas into the launder system.
