Geotechnical model is stiff.

Geotechnical model is stiff.

Geotechnical model is stiff.

(OP)
I am modelling an underground mine (depth =400 m). the model is three dimensional. the dimensions of the model are 250 *250 *250 m. a vertical load was applied on the top of the model to simulate the overburden rock, the bottom is fixed, and the edges are constrained in the X and Y directions.

the model is divided into layers, every layer represents a rock type. the element type is C3D8R. First to make my life easy, i assume elastic behavior and make the whole model one block without interfaces between the rock layers.

After deleting the elements to simulate the mine excavation, i checked the displacement. i found that the displacement is very small compared to reality. in other words, the model is so stiff. I realized that the main reason is a very high inertia since the whole model is one block, so i added interfaces between the rock layers and changed the element type to C3D20R. but the model still stiff, the rock layer should bent and deform more than what i see in the model results.

Is there any ideas about how to make the model behaves better than that (layers bent better).

Thanks.

RE: Geotechnical model is stiff.

A possible explanation *may* be the amount or type of loading is incorrect. In the model that you had previously uploaded, you applied a uniform pressure. Is it supposed to be a uniform pressure? Could it be a concentrated load? Or could it be a displacement b.c.?
