How can I find the permissible stresses for parallel strand lumber for specific manufacturers? The Canadian Wood Design Manual lists approximate stresses but also says to check with the specific manufacturer. I am interested in manufacturers in the southern Ontario region (Toronto). A Bing search does not come up with anything on parallel strand lumber.

RE: Parallel Strand Lumber (PSL)

Weyerhauser has what they call parallam PSL's, but I don't see canada specific info on those - only their floor joist really.

RE: Parallel Strand Lumber (PSL)

Bing search? That could be the problem...try a google search.

Best bet is to probably contact the manufacturer directly. I've searched for this before and I usually end up using the allowable bending moment and shear provided. Weyerhaeuser has these values on their website, I'm sure others do as well.

structSU10 and CANEIT; Thanks you for this information. Yes I would like to use Google, but seem to not be able to get to Google...I think Microsoft has arranged things so can't get there by the normal procedures!

RE: Parallel Strand Lumber (PSL)

This links to the weyerhauser specifier guide, design stresses and loads can be found within.

If you dig on their web site enough or get to right person on the phone, most engineered lumber manufactures will have design guides for their products.

RE: Parallel Strand Lumber (PSL)

I was under the impression that PSL is a proprietary patented material technology which Weyerhauser is the exclusive manufacturer. They call it "Parallam". see www.ilevel.com.

LVL is a different story however.

Ajk1:
The allowable stresses and mechanical properties of these manufactured wood products are very much dependant upon the wood species a manufacturer uses, their manufacturing process and the adhesives used. So, you have to get their design literature and then spec. a specific product or equal or better. Check your local lumber yards and suppliers to determine availability in your area.
