Destructive & Non-Destructive Testing HELP!!

Destructive & Non-Destructive Testing HELP!!

(OP)

Are there any good sites that inform about destructive and non-destructive material testing techniques? (Preferably one site with all of it on, lol). All iv been able to find are different sites with thousands of different pieces of equipment for sale that used to perform the tests, not what the tests are about or the science behind it. Are there any sites on destructive testing??

Any help would be greatful

Thanks

RE: Destructive & Non-Destructive Testing HELP!!

Try the British Institute of NDT at www.bindt.org

I don't think there is a lot on the site, but they may be able to point you in the right direction

I am not sure that such a site exists.  I would recommend you start at the following sites:

http://www.ndt.net/

http://www.ndt.org/

http://www.asnt.org/

ASNT has some excellent publications at their website.  ASM International has some excellent publications on this topic as well, including ASM HANDBOOK Volume 17 Nondestructive Evaluation and Quality Control.  You can find out more on their website:

http://www.asminternational.org/

Specific manufacturers sites can also be useful.  Some sites you may find useful include the following:

http://www.mac-ndt.com/

http://www.magnaflux-online.com/

http://www.protoxrd.com/xrdfacts.html

Some other sites to consider are research centers affliaited with various universities:

1. The USAF Technical Order for NDI is available as

follows: http://pdsm.wpafb.af.mil/toprac/Category_33_TOs.htm

Click on Tab for 33B-1-1

Select 33B-1-1 from the long list that pops-up.

This down-load is very large +,- 33MB.. but represents 770Pgs of basic aerospace NDI methods. It is well written and illustrated for the (5) basic NDI methods: Penetrant, Magnetic Particle, Eddy Currecnt, Ultrasonic & X-Ray [Radiographic].

2.  Also, go to:  http://assist2.daps.dla.mil/quicksearch/

and down load the following mil-handbooks on NDI

MIL-HDBK-728/1  NDI Gnl
MIL-HDBK-728/2  EC
MIL-HDBK-728/3  DP
MIL-HDBK-728/4  MPI
MIL-HDBK-728/5  X-ray
MIL-HDBK-728/6  US

MIL-HDBK-793   NDI Composites

MIL-HDBK-1890   NDI of welded joints

NOTE: there are many old Mil-Specs on NDI... but most have been ttranslated to mil-hdbks or have been given to SAE's loving-care [AMS-STD-xxxx]

3.  There are MANY NDI related specs at:

SAE.org [Jxxx, AMSxxx, AMS-STD-xxxx, ARPxxx, AIRxxx and ASxxx specs]

ASTM.org

aws.org

etc...

NOTE: These industry specs may prove very valuable... but are hard to find on the web, except thru the "owing organization, or a commercial services such as IHS.

RE: Destructive & Non-Destructive Testing HELP!!

NDT- There are about seven methods
1.RT-Radiography Testing-Uses a radio active source like Ir192 to inspect the welds(can be used for different components also like casting)

2.UT-Ultrosonic Testing-Uses sound waves to detect flaws in the welds and the materials of any shape or type.

3.MPI-Magnetic Particle Inspection- Used to find surface and sub surface defects.AC Magnetic yoke or a permanent magnet is used

4.DPI-Dye Penetrant Inspection - Used find defects that are open to the surface like a crack.

Other methods are ET-Eddy current Testing(for inspection tubes in heat exchangers)
Thermography- Gives mapping of surface tempratures. Can be used to find failure of insulation, refactory etc.
Leak Testing, Visual testing.

Persons carry out these testing shall be qualified as per ASNT or CSWIP.
