API 650 - Air leak test on Bottom Sump, Manhole reinforcing and Nozzle reinforcing

API 650 - Air leak test on Bottom Sump, Manhole reinforcing and Nozzle reinforcing

(OP)
Hi,

I had a doubt on my QC department that created a procedure of air leak test with below requirement:

Pressure: 1 bar
Holding time: 5 min
Additional: Soap solution

Can anybody here help me to clarify this requirement, Besides that I can't find any requirement on the 1 bar pressure with holding time of 5min in API 650.

Thank
Marvin

RE: API 650 - Air leak test on Bottom Sump, Manhole reinforcing and Nozzle reinforcing

There is no specific requirement in the code for the reo pads leak test. The 1 bar seems a bit high, but it should work. 5 minutes to go all around the welds with soapy solution also seems a bit longer than required but hey, better do it twice around than missing a leak. All seems reasonable. I can't comment on the sump, since I don't know what are you actually testing.
Cheers,

RE: API 650 - Air leak test on Bottom Sump, Manhole reinforcing and Nozzle reinforcing

API 650 7.3.4 Inspection of Reinforcing-Plate Welds
After fabrication is completed but before the tank is filled with test water, the reinforcing plates shall be tested by the Manufacturer by applying up to 100 kPa (15 lbf/in.2) gauge pneumatic pressure between the tank shell and the reinforcement plate on each opening using the telltale hole specified in 5.7.5.1. While each space is subjected to such pressure, a soap film, linseed oil, or another material suitable for the detection of leaks shall be applied to all attachment welding around the reinforcement, both inside and outside the tank.
