Hi,

I have a doubt regarding the stress analysis of laminated composite cantilever beam. How do I carry out the stress calculations of a cantilever beam with a point load at the end of 10N?say for example I have a beam of length 1000 mm, width of 20 mm of 6 plies of 1 mm each so thickness will be 6 mm. I have used carbon/epoxy (0/45/90)s layup and material properties are E1=126000 Mpa, E2=11000 Mpa. I dont know how to calculate such problems without FEA. I want to know how to solve such problems using a calculator.

For a start, do you seriously mean (0/45/90)s or do you mean (0/+45/-45/90)s? The results will be substantially different because to /45/ option will produce serious coupling effects in bending because the B matrix will have non-zero terms and this will result in bending moments producing direct stresses and curvatures, especially twisting. For the +/- option the terms cancel out at least for the direct stresses and bending moments. The twisting effects diminish with laminate thickness.
