Clear Span as specified in SDI

Clear Span as specified in SDI

Clear Span as specified in SDI

When it says clear span on SDI (Steel Deck Institute), does it mean from center line (web to web) or flange tip to flange tip.

Thanks in advance.

RE: Clear Span as specified in SDI

We use centerline of support for beams and joists - the location of the flange tips vary so much in our projects and the slight difference in capacity isn't worth the effort to calculate.

RE: Clear Span as specified in SDI

I agree with JAE. You also have sweep in steel beam, along with erection tolerance, and the CL distances should be enough to counteract those issues.

Thank you JAE and structSU10

But in my project there are only three of them, so my question again will be if we can calculate the length from flange tip to flange tip then can I use that as clear span or I still have to use from center line of web to web as clear span

RE: Clear Span as specified in SDI

What does it matter if your capacity is 166 psf for clear span and 162 psf for center-to-center, if your applied load is only 100 psf.

RE: Clear Span as specified in SDI

One simple question, zero answers to that simple question. Clear span means from flange tip to flange tip.

Thank you nutte

RE: Clear Span as specified in SDI

I agree with nutte. Clear means clear.
