How to determine hole tolerance

How to determine hole tolerance

How to determine hole tolerance

(OP)
I have a m10 bolt that is required for a new design on a part. How do I calculate the tolerance for the hole?

RE: How to determine hole tolerance

Without knowing the application it is difficult to give a definite answer but ISO 273 is the spec for clearance holes for ISO bolts and screws.

RE: How to determine hole tolerance

The position, drill, or thread tolerance?
Check out ASME-Y14.5 and Machinery Handbook.

Thanks guys! I figured it out. Was having trouble making sure I had the right class of fit from the machinery handbook. Doubled checked with some of the guys here at work. Thanks for the charts too! They will be very handy I'm sure

RE: How to determine hole tolerance

Out of curiosity, what is the reason that positional tolerance values specified in both Genium tables seem not to take MMC dimension of the through hole into account, but rather its nominal value?

RE: How to determine hole tolerance

oonker, if I might caution over reliance on standard charts etc. As pmarc mentions some of them make assumptions that may not be relevant to your application etc. Some hole size charts don't explicitly take into account the location tolerance - the ones in machineries handbook are like that as I recall.

RE: How to determine hole tolerance

pmarc,

I do not have the Genium manual. I do have Mechanical Design Handbook by Harold A. Rothbart, which has a similar table. This table claims the show the floating fastener case, but their calculations a for the fixed fastener case, and they have rounded their holes up to the next English drill size.

The principal is simple, and the calculations are easy.
