problems with Oxidized Zinc components, please Help!

(OP)
Hi all,

I am experiencing a problem right now, A batch of Zinc components is oxidized with clear visible white spots on 90% of surface before it has the chance to be satin plated. Is a proper way to deal with the oxidized surface? can I still save this batch of Zinc components and send it off for plating? If the components can be re-treated correctly and be plated, will the oxidized surface from the inside of the components cause a problem in the future? Please help!!

RE: problems with Oxidized Zinc components, please Help!

Removal of white oxidation products from zinc is usually done by immersing the part in dilute sulfuric acid. The following is a typical sequence for cleaning and plating zinc parts made by high pressure die casting:

1. Caustic Soak Cleaner
2. Caustic Electro cleaner - Anodic
3. 0.5%/wt sulfuric acid dip
4. CuCN Strike
5. Nickel Strike
6. Electroless Nickel

You may want to have the parts descaled in sulfuric acid first, and then subject them to the normal cleaning and plating process.
