I'm on nx8, want to improve the display of smooth edges, but the setting is alway greyed out,
why,

Those options only apply to certain rendering styles (shaded is not one of them). Switch to static wireframe, for instance, and they will become available.

This has changed in NX 8.5 where even in a shaded view, you'll now have full control, independent of the settings for 'hard' edges, of the display (color, font, width) of the smooth edges in your model.
