Refile utility

Refile utility

(OP)
Can anyone guide me on how to run the refile utility? we just upgraded to 7.5, and are having issues with save as to new revisions or new items, and was told to run a refile utility, but have never ran it.

thanks,

RE: Refile utility

Maybe you are suppose to do the refile thing, but we never have done it and have no problems.
For us just saving it after opening it up in NX7.5 was adequate.
I would be interested in hearing why using the refile utility is better.

RE: Refile utility

Are you running native NX (no PDM/PLM), Teamcenter, or some other PDM/PLM?
I ask because there are different versions of the refile utility for native and TC.

RE: Refile utility

When you open a file from an older version there are some conversions that NX does behind the scenes. This causes the older version files to open slower than current version files. The refile utility lets you batch these conversions off-hours so you don't need to manually spend the time opening and saving files. One recent version of the refile utility did some other stuff that simply opening the file and saving didn't do; I think it had to do with the lightweight body management stuff, I don't remember the details right now.

The refile utility is more important in a Teamcenter environment because once a file has a release status, it cannot be saved by the average user. Now you have a conversion delay every time you open a file, multiplied by the number of users; the wasted time can add up...

RE: Refile utility

Typically I only ran refile on my hardware library parts as normal users could not modify them. It prevents the parts from being flagged as 'modified' as they have already been updated to the latest version of NX.

I suspect you are having issues with your template parts and those can either be opened and resaved or run the refile utility against them. Look in the UGII directory for refile.exe. If you open a UG command prompt and type refile, it should list the options for the command.

We are running UG/NX through Teamcenter, the main problem is opening existing files and doing a save as to a new item or a new revision, this however is not consistant on some files it works fine on others it hangs up. It just shows the windows icon spinning but nothing happens, and we end up having to use ctl-alt-del to open task manager and it shows "NX not responding", so we kill that session and then we have to do the same with Teamcenter. We then reboot our system and when you open that component, it shows that a dataset was created but there is nothing there.

RE: Refile utility

In your windows start menu, go to Start - Siemens NX - NX Tools - Command Prompt.
Enter refile_part.exe and the help will be displayed for you.
