I have a customer who forgets to back-save the models and drawings from 2013 to 2008 which I use. I need a good, but simple, converter program. I tried Autocad's own DWG TrueView but it was very difficult to download and install. I have done this a lot in other programs, and I wasn't prepared for the level of difficulty there would be. I finally got the files converted but I would like to find something else. Please let me know if you are using one you like.

RE: convert 2013 to 2007

Downloading and installing DWGTrue View should be easy?

RE: convert 2013 to 2007

Bricscad should be able to do it... back to release 9...

After reading these comments I brought up my DraftSight, opened the file and then saved it as needed. I could just do it from there. Worked perfect!

How different is the download+install of the official converter Autodesk DWG Trueview from other Windows applications? Click to download, setup.exe to install. Please note that DraftSight and any other non-Autodesk software does not create a standard, genuine DWG file format. Some drawing objects may be skipped or distorted.

Vlad, thanks for your reply.

Since I had not moved on from 2008 with my toolbars on all four sides and didn't want to work in the later, Vista-based, ribbon-at-the-top programs, I just wanted a simple conversion utility. I thought maybe there would be a free and simple backward converter to do this. I downloaded the TrueView program but it would require a learning curve - I never found a Save function after clicking on Convert DWG.

That was when I realized I had used DraftSight for other things and could easily use it for this, too. All it required was to open the drawing, SaveAs, and close it. Yes, I'm aware of the warning message from Autodesk about files not being saved by an "official" product but that goes away after a "Save As" in my Autocad.

Thanks for your help.

RE: convert 2013 to 2007

I understand the ribbon-fobia, there are many AutoCAD-clones that do not have a ribbon-interface yet (but they will probably have it in future).

The DWG Trueview conversion function offers batch operation - just click the Convert button, no need to Save separately.

As for DraftSight or other clones: the problem is not in the warning, the problem is in not using the real DWG file format - so the contents of your drawing may be incomplete or inaccurate. Try e.g. to open the Budweiser.dwg test file from www.cadstudio.cz/budweiser
