A105 Q/T instead of A105N for Valve body

A105 Q/T instead of A105N for Valve body

A105 Q/T instead of A105N for Valve body

(OP)
Hi all,

We have a requirement of ASTM A105 Normalized (A105N) for valve body, but vendor are proposing A105 Quenching & tempering (A105 Q/T).
I was searching for ASTM and other metallurgical books but didn't get anything, Is there any reason or so that we can accept this deviation?
Thanks

RE: A105 Q/T instead of A105N for Valve body

That's a very open question, since you would need operating input to answer. A105 comes in various forms that are indicated after "A105": A- annealing, N- Normalizing, NT-Normaling+Tempering, QT-Quenching+Tempering, and each are devised with specific applications and conditions in mind.

RE: A105 Q/T instead of A105N for Valve body

The use of Q&T is acceptable for service, as is other stated heat treatments. For SA 105 applications the reason for the various heat treatments is to accommodate heavy wall or large components where quenching may be necessary because normalization may not be practical to achieve the required mechanical properties.

If your valve body will be used for H2S service, hardness becomes an issue.

Well that's what tempering is for.
