Replacement Wood Truss Dimensional Responsibility

Replacement Wood Truss Dimensional Responsibility

Replacement Wood Truss Dimensional Responsibility

(OP)
If you have a portion of a residential roof structure (standard gable wood pre-manufactured trusses) that was damaged and you want to order new trusses, who's responsibility is it to obtain the EXACT existing dimensions to order new trusses? Contractor, engineer, or truss manufacturer?

RE: Replacement Wood Truss Dimensional Responsibility

Short Answer - Whoever is getting paid to do so.

When you took on the job was that secified? If not, I'd give dimensions as close as possible and specify for the contractor and manufacturer to cooridinate and confirm.

RE: Replacement Wood Truss Dimensional Responsibility

Engineer should never be responsible for dimensions - put a footnote on every dimension that says:"Dimension is approximate, for construction cost estimate only"

RE: Replacement Wood Truss Dimensional Responsibility

I mark all existing dimensions "Field Verify" for renovation work. Typically, the contractor will bear this responsibility.

"Cut to fit, pound to suit"

Thanks guys for the confirmation, this is how I've approached this in the past as well. We have an inexperienced GC who's pushing back on "field verify exact dimensions".

RE: Replacement Wood Truss Dimensional Responsibility

He will acquire experience, eventually.

RE: Replacement Wood Truss Dimensional Responsibility

I do the best I can to have the GC VIF. I place the dimensions I measure on the drawings. I these are the dimensions I used for the design. If you are responsible for getting all dimensions, are you going to be responsible if something doesn't fit? Is the GC/owner going to want you to foot the bill for new material? Too much liability for me.

The way I look at it, it's means & methods of installation, and I'm not a tradesman or surveyor. Maybe the sub who actually places the trusses will want to hold certain dimensions short so he can shim them into place to match neighboring trusses.
