minimum hydro test pressure

minimum hydro test pressure

(OP)
Can somebody guide me on below issue.

Piping spool is designed with A105 as Flange material & A 106 Gr B as header material.
Design temp is 250 deg C & design code is B31.3, per equ'n 24 of para 345.4.1 I am getting two different test value , one for Header material & another for Flange material.

which value to be selected for minimim hydrotest pressure & reason for it?

RE: minimum hydro test pressure

smart 143,

We could do with a few more details such as the design pressure, flange rating and what your differences are.

On a first pass, the section above equation 24 states that where the system contains different materials, excluding supports and bolting, the max value of Pt shall be the min test pressure. It later defines bolting as (e.g. pipe, fittings, valves and flanges), which appears to me that you should take only the value you get for the pipe increase in test pressure to account for the difference in test temp vs design temp. It would be good to see what your design presusre is versus the de-rated MAWP of the flange from B 16.5. If this is very close then you may want to test at whichever the higer value is so long as you don't exceed yield on the lower rated piece.

My motto: Learn something new every day

Also: There's usually a good reason why everyone does it that way
