Assistance with 410 to 410S Weld Procedures Section VIII Div I

Assistance with 410 to 410S Weld Procedures Section VIII Div I

Assistance with 410 to 410S Weld Procedures Section VIII Div I

(OP)
We have a project that requires welding of 410 to 410S and have some issues that we need assistance with.

It appears that the material and HAZ needs to be charpy impact tested in order to be code stamped. We have been unable to locate material that passes the charpy test requirements and in the past we failed a test plate in the HAZ using Inco 82 rod.

Any advise and/or direction will be much appreciated.

RE: Assistance with 410 to 410S Weld Procedures Section VIII Div I

More information is needed - what is the thickness of the weld joint? Are you conducting PWHT? What Code???? Most likely, you are having trouble with the 410 stainless steel versus the 410S, which being a low carbon version of 410, behaves like a ferritic stainless steel.

B+PV Section VII Div I

We have 410 to 410S at 3/8" and 3/4"

410S t o410S at 3/8" and 3/4"

RE: Assistance with 410 to 410S Weld Procedures Section VIII Div I

Are you performing PWHT of the 410 weld joints? Also, similar for the 410S weld joints?

RE: Assistance with 410 to 410S Weld Procedures Section VIII Div I

(OP)
I believe both will be PWHT

RE: Assistance with 410 to 410S Weld Procedures Section VIII Div I

Follow the rules in Section VIII, Div 1 under UHA-32 for preheat requirements, your choice of filler metal is austenitic so this is acceptable. What more do you need?

Passing charpy of the base metal is our current issue- we have paid suppliers to test and none are passing

RE: Assistance with 410 to 410S Weld Procedures Section VIII Div I

Why did you pay the suppliers for product that did not meet your requirements??? The 410 stainless needs to be quenched and tempered or annealed before welding, and the 410S needs to be stress relieved to avoid excessive grain growth. Change suppliers until you find one that can provide material certs with specified impact values.

we just paid for their testing- do you know any suppliers that have 410 material charpy test approved?

RE: Assistance with 410 to 410S Weld Procedures Section VIII Div I

What's the MDMT?

RE: Assistance with 410 to 410S Weld Procedures Section VIII Div I

(OP)
-20 deg F

RE: Assistance with 410 to 410S Weld Procedures Section VIII Div I

As you have discovered, it will prove difficult to obtain. Just because an Engineer specifies a material and an MDMT (possibly not the truely needed MDMT) does not make the material selection correct. Good Luck!
