NACE MR0103 Welding Procedure Filler Metal Allowances

NACE MR0103 Welding Procedure Filler Metal Allowances

NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-2 allows the use of welding consumables and procedures that produce a deposit containing more than 1% mass fraction nickel upon successful weld SSC qualification by testing in accordance with Annex B (A.2.1.4, last par.) Does NACE MR0103 allow these consummables and procedures upon successful testing? The reference to filler metals, that I found, is Par. 2.2 of SP0472-2010 and it only allows Carbon Steel filler metals.

RE: NACE MR0103 Welding Procedure Filler Metal Allowances

Hi,

MR-103 does not have specific restriction on maximum nickel content for base metals and welding consumables.

However for C-Mn steel, addition of Nickel tends to increase acicularity which could negatively affcet the hardness of C-Mn steel. However C-Mn welding consumable alloyed with Nickel, are typically classified under "G" category in AWS/ ASME 5.5, with the maximum "Ni" limit restricted below "1%". These consumable are accpetable subject to Sec-IX and MR 0103 procedure procedure qualification requirements.

The link below provides some insights on effets of Nickel on C-Mn steel weld metal.

Thanks.

I appreciate the response. My initial understanding of the relationship between NACE MR0103 and SP0472-2010 for welding is the former provides basic requirements for materials and welding, while the latter provides specific methods for welding that are required to prevent excessive weldment hardness. Is this correct?

RE: NACE MR0103 Welding Procedure Filler Metal Allowances

The former actually directly references the latter for specific requirements.
