I am working on a renovation of three story wood building. The owner wants to remove a load bearing wall on the 1st floor. This wood stud wall has load bearing walls stacked on top of it (at the 2nd floor and third floor levels). In theory, if I add a steel beam at the locations with columns on either end, I would be able to carry the load back to the existing foundation. (the foundation needs to be increased in size).
However, I am unable to understand the way the construction sequence would be. How can the contractor shore the trusses that are bearing on the 3rd floor and at the roof? Does he need to build a shoring mechanism all the way up to the roof?

He may. It depends onthe capacity of the first story floor level floor joists to span the loads above to the shoring below the first floor. If they cannot do this, then you willhave to add shoring above until the floor joists at that level can transfer the load.

Perhaps it would be easier to build new footings and columns as required, then add two beams, one each side of the existing wall, then connect through the existing wall with an adequate connection to carry the load from above and finally, cut off existing studs at the underside of the new beams.
