Construction Management and Reporting

Construction Management and Reporting

Construction Management and Reporting

(OP)
I am a project manager at a petrochemical plant. We have what we call construction managers who are supposed to be following the construction work in the field on various large and small projects. I am now tasked with developing a specification that outlines the construction manager's responsibilitie and reporting method. This document needs to cover items such as their weekly meeings with different contractors on projects, the action items remaining on the project and add any new ones that come up, discussing the present work activities and also review a two weeks look-ahead schedule with the subs, manpower loading, how to handle any changes to the intent of the contract among other things. I appreciate if you would share any writen document you may have that oulines this or at lease the forms a typical construction manager at you facility uses during the couse of the projects.

RE: Construction Management and Reporting

Try searching job ads for 'construction managers'. These job ads typically include a detailed job description.

RE: Construction Management and Reporting

Ask all the construction managers for an outline of how they perform their jobs. Throw away the outlines from people that do not perform well, structure the job description around outlines from people who do?

Dear Apieron and 1gibson, those are all great ideas which I have sort of used in the development of this Guide document...I am not looking for another Job Description. It needs to be like a Guide document which would reference some forms they need to use during the execution of the projects such as safety audit form, weeklly meeting form and so on. Thanks for your input.

RE: Construction Management and Reporting

I would have the same comment with respect to forms. My assumption is that if you don't already have standard forms to reference, there are not standard forms and everyone uses something different. You want to avoid changing forms on your most successful people, but try to change the forms of the least successful. This is good, the inverse is not.

Don't modify or take away the tools that successful guys use, this would be my primary concern if I were carrying out the task you described (or any "top down" standardization.)
