Section IX QW451 note (3)

Section IX QW451 note (3)

Section IX QW451 note (3)

(OP)
Note (3) of QW 451 in ASME Section IX lists processes SMAW, SAW, GMAW, PAW and GTAW as acceptable for this note. It does not however list FCAW. Throughout Section IX GMAW and FCAW are listed together, whether it be for procedure or welder essential variables. Interpretation IX-86-46 provides that GMAW and FCAW qualify for one another in terms of welder qualification.
Has anyone found an interpretation that clarifies note (3) for FCAW as well?
It appears to me that the intention throughout Section IX is to include FCAW as part of GMAW.

RE: Section IX QW451 note (3)

Sec-IX(2010) covers the esssential variables of GMAW and FCAW together.
Essential varibles for Procedure Qualfications(both FCAW and GMAW)are listed together under QW-255, while those for performance qualfications are listed under QW-355.

On the same note qualification limits of QW-451 are applicable for FCAW also.

If you have access to the older interpretations, look at Interpretation: IX-89-107. Deatled Q&As are provided forboth procedure and performance qialification variables and limits.

Thanks.

RE: Section IX QW451 note (3)

I am copying here interpretation IX-89-107

IX-89-107
Subject:Section IX, QW-452
Date Issued:June 18, 1991
File Number:BC91-124
Question (1): A 50 mm thick test plate done for a weld procedure by FCAW is welded full thickness and receives X-ray examination and mechanical tests, including impact tests. Is the thickness test range qualified 3/16 in. to 8 in. as per QW-451.1?
Reply (1): Yes, except when notch toughness is a requirement the minimum thickness qualified is 5/8 in.
