Welding Gough Defects

Welding Gough Defects

(OP)
Hello,

We have a ASTM A 572 gr.50 transmission tower pole baseplate damaged by gouging.
The plate thickness is about 75 mm to 100 mm. Can this be repaired by welding? if not what would be the repair method you would suggest?

Thanks in advance.

RE: Welding Gough Defects

Yes, gouges in steel plates can usually be repaired by welding. Pick the right welding process and procedure and weld the gouge full and grind it smooth.

RE: Welding Gough Defects

If it is arc gouged damage you have a little more work to do in terms of preparing the gouged surface for weld repair. Remove heat affected material before welding and perform surface nondestructive testing both before and after welding/blend grinding. If the gouge was mechanically induced, I would also perform a surface nondestructive test before and after weld repair.

RE: Welding Gough Defects

Depending on where the damage is relative to load paths and how deep they are other options are do nothing or grinding a smooth profile to remove the stress riser.

Thanks a lot
