I AM LOOKING FOR INFORMATION ON HOW TO DESIGN A Y SHAPED CONCRETE COLUMN I.E Y SHAPED IN ELEVATION. I HAVE HUGE LOADS ON THE COLUMN ARMS AND I WANT TO INTRODUCE A CONCRETE TIE ON TOP TO REDUCE BENDING MOMENTS. THE TENSION I HAVE IS AROUND 550KN.

RE: Y SHAPED CONCRETE COLUMN.DESIGN

FEA and or strut and tie method?

RE: Y SHAPED CONCRETE COLUMN.DESIGN

It will not be a concrete tie. It will be a steel tie encased in concrete. Make sure you have good anchorage each end of the tie.

Thanks all for the responses. I still need more information e.g typical example of this design or a link were i can read more.

RE: Y SHAPED CONCRETE COLUMN.DESIGN

I don't know what more information is needed. Calculate the tension and supply enough steel to carry it. You may want to use a low steel stress to prevent excessive cracking in the concrete cover. Or perhaps you should use a post-tensioned tie.

If the load on the two branches of the 'Y' are a combination of dead and live load, you will need to analyze the column as a frame and consider unbalanced loads.

Agree with BA. You just need to get up to speed on the strut and tie method of analysis and design. As BA said in his first post, the most important thing is anchorage of the tie.
