Bolting surface treated steel to stainless steel

Bolting surface treated steel to stainless steel

(OP)
I have a stainless steel bracket, and I need to attach another bracket to it. My client wants to reduce cost and use steel with a surface treatment and bolt that to the stainless steel bracket. My concern is that this will rust. My question is; will this rust or is there a surface treatment for the steel that will prevent this?

Thanks!

RE: Bolting surface treated steel to stainless steel

Depends. if it's dry enough, it won't rust. ever.
What's the surface treatment? What are the atmospheric conditions? What kind of a bolt are you using? ...

It is a consumer product and it is used outdoors. The bolts will be stainless steel. The surface treatment will probably be galvanizing. If there is a better surface treatment for this situation please let me know.

Galvanizing against stainless will be lousy. Better to use organic coatings (paint).

Try Dacromet or Stalguard coating on the bolts. Cory is right, the galvanic will eat up that galvanized/ SS couple.

Does the first bracket have to be stainless? Can you just go all hot-dip galvanized?

HDG is generally more durable than various paints. Less so in a marine environment.
