Wier aeration

Wier aeration

(OP)
Hi, i am currently researching the foundations of hydraulics and have come across a issue. Why do contracted and suppressed wiers need aeration ? I know how it happens but cannot pinpoint why, this seems to be a strange subject as internet and textbook references aren't explaining this topic. Can someone please explain this to me or point me in the right direction on where to find this information?

Many thanks

RE: Wier aeration

If not vented, the air beneath the nappe may be exhausted, causing a reduction of pressure in the nappe, with a corresponding increase in discharge for a given head.

In a suppressed weir, the sides of the structure may prevent air from circulating.
