Edge List Path selection between two materials

Edge List Path selection between two materials

(OP)
Hello,

I'm modelling a ground anchorage in ABAQUS and want to plot the shear and normal stress along a particular path. The model consists of just one part with partitions to distinguish between two different materials. The path is along the interface of the two materials. However when I try to create a path (using the shortest distance) it gives me a choice of which side of the edge will be highlighted. If the path is made up of the left side being highlighted then I get a certain value of stress. I then tried it with the right hand side being highlighted, and I get a different value of stress. I've increased the average to 100% but still don't quite understand why I get different values and which side is correct.
I've attached a couple of screenshots so it's clearer!

I'd be grateful for some help.
