UGS nX7.5 templates question
UGS nX7.5 templates question
(OP)
Hi all- I've just started my first design engineer job, and I'm having to use templates, something I didn't really bother with at university (I just adapted the standard template unigraphics gives you)
now, i've made my template as a drawing, saved it as a .prt file and modified my PAX file so that I can open it.
now what I'd really like to do, is be able to open it FROM a part- so i can be modelling, then click start->drafting->and there'll be my template, in the list of 4 or 5 that it gives you.
at the moment i have to go new->drawing->then select my template. this is giving me issues as i can do that, select my part that I want to draw, (it opens as part of an assembly) draw it, save- but i have to move stuff around, so when it comes to re-opening my drawing, it can't find the original component.
if there's a way of saving an assembly complete, with no references to existing part files, then that'd work too.
I'd be asking around at work, but everyone else uses catia, which is a whole different kettle of fish.
any ideas? also, hello!
Cheers,
Simon

RE: UGS nX7.5 templates question
The behaviour that are noticing as of now is the Master Model concept (where the master part file is included as a component in an assembly and we do the drafting in the child (assembly part). There are various advantages using this concept (perhaps you can search the earlier threads related to this).
But in case you still wish to do the drafting in the same part file then you need to use Standalone drafting (find image attached herewith).

No need of going to FILE/NEW.

RE: UGS nX7.5 templates question
I had a look at the image, and have modified my PAX file to allow stand-alone drafting- though there is no drop-down box at the top, so i'm not sure if it's automatically standalone, or if there's another process that I need to go through.
assuming that selecting a stand-alone template means you're in stand-alone drafting, I select my template, add a view of my part (navigate to part) and do a quick drawing to test it out. I save the drawing (file, save as...) close unigraphics, and try to open my saved drawing. then I get the error message "failed to find file using current ssearch options, parts left unloaded" which is what i've been trying to avoid.
sorry if i seem a bit "dense"- I'm sure i'll get up to speed eventually, but at the moment bits like this can really throw me.
Thanks
Simon

RE: UGS nX7.5 templates question
my template isn't there.
now, i have edited the Sheet PAX file in templates, but there were already 11 templates in there? this is "ugs_sheet_templates.PAX" not "ugs_drawing_templates.PAX"- (drawing templates.pax has my templates referenced, and when i open a new drawing, that comes in to play fine)
RE: UGS nX7.5 templates question
Yes you are correct if you wish to use your own customized sheets then you need to do the entries in your ugs_sheet_templates.PAX file.
The ugs_drawing_templates.PAX contains entries for FILE/NEW/DRAFTING.
If you cannot find them then re-check the units of the templates and the one you are using while selecting your sheet. If everything is fine with the pax file then your customized templates will appear on the list.

RE: UGS nX7.5 templates question
I can't find them, and I've checked that the units are correct, both template and PAX file are in metric.
one thing i can't understand is why there are 11 entries in the pax file (before i modified it) but the new sheet dialog box only shows the 5 templates?

RE: UGS nX7.5 templates question
There will be 11 entries (some for ENGLISH (INCHES) and other for METRIC).Now if you have a part modelled in METRIC then the sheet template will show you only METRIC entries.
I am furnishing a image herewith.Do check it if your part units and the one in the templates matches properly.
If it still doesn't work for you could you please share the pax files with us.

RE: UGS nX7.5 templates question
it turns out i hadn't added the .prt extension in the pax file- i'd been staring at that paragraph for ages, couldn't find anything wrong with it. it's viewable now in the dialog box, which is great, thanks.
It still won't load, mind- i get an error message saying i don't have permission to open the file when i try to open the template. There was a lot going on at the time though, and now i'm not on the same computer, so i'll have to come back with some more information when I can.
But thank you- I've been able to create my drawing and save it, i'll just have to make sure i'm careful about where i save things to until i'm sorted.
Thanks
Simon
