Engraving non-standard text on freeform surface

Engraving non-standard text on freeform surface

Engraving non-standard text on freeform surface

(OP)
Hello,

I'm currently using NX 7.5.5.4 and want to engrave a non-standard text on a freeform surfaced ring.
I have problems getting the text engraved into the ring, and the small bit that I manage to engraved is not engraved normal to the rings surface.

I have the text in sketch mode, and used 'wrap/unwarp' to project the curves on a cylindrical surface, almost the same a the ring surface. Now I tried to use 'divide face' on the surface and then wanted to use 'thicken' to get the result, as seen in other threads.
However, when I select the 'large' silhoutte of the text to divide the face, I get 'dividing objects do not divide selected faces', while they for my opinion do and also the curve is closed correctly.
I did work for the smaller points, but here I could not use 'thicken' (as given as a solution in other threads, but for me it selects all the other faces too) but had to use extrude. The problem with extrude is that it does not extrude normal to the face/plane, while I did use that option.
Can you help me getting the text engraved, what am I doing wrong and how can I get an engraving normal to the surface?
I added the part file to get a better understanding of my problem.

For an idea of the method I used to come to this, some more information:
Maybe there is a much faster/easier method available.
I only have a black-white (text black, background white) image of the non-standard text, so I first converted it to a dxf vector image using 'WinTopo Freeware'. This resulted in single curves representing the text.
I extruded all these lines with an offset to get filled text again.
Then I projected the silhouette curves to a plane and put them in a sketch.
This sketch is wrapped around a cylinder, almost identical to the surface of the ring I made on forehand using a sketch and sweep. Then I started to divide faces, but get stuck there.

Thank you on advance for your help.

I finally solved it myself!
It is all about tolerances (or a line which is partly intersecting instead of connecting the other line).
By using an even smaller tolerance (I used 0.001), it seemed to work together with 'extract' on the divided faces.

RE: Engraving non-standard text on freeform surface

Just curious, and it appears you solved it, but are you trying to model the text for visual purposes or model it for creating manufacturing operations?

Btw, is that the one ring to rule them all???
