SA 516 Gr70 Tube Sheet

(OP)
Dear All,

I would like to confirm that is there any restriction for SA 516 Gr 70 to use Tube Sheet as per latest revision of ASME section VIII?
Now I need to use this material as tube sheet. But my ASME U stamp inspector suggest me to use forge material only. But because of other reason, I still want to use this SA 516 Gr 70.
When I checked in ASME section VIII, I could not find that this material should not be used tube sheet. If somebody know that there is any paragraph such a reason of I can't use it, please help me and tell which area I should find it. For me I need to firm the reason to talk with inspector. Thanks.

RE: SA 516 Gr70 Tube Sheet

ngapulone,

Will you be welding on this tube sheet? I don't have a code book right in front of me but I do believe that Section VIII requires either a PT or MT around the outside peripheral edge of tube sheets constructed of plate material before and after welding - the NDE is to check for possible laminations in the plate material. Could this be what your inspector is concerned with? This wouldn't be a requirement if you were using a forging. Check the UW and UHX sections.

yes, I'll weld Tube sheet and shell. If so, I need to do NDE to raw material before drilling the tube holes. and NDE again to weldment after finish welding. Is it?
Thanks a lot numberfive.

RE: SA 516 Gr70 Tube Sheet

You can use plate material such as SA-516 70 for tubesheet as long as client spec does not require forging only. If the tubesheet has hub, see Appendix 20 of the Code.

RE: SA 516 Gr70 Tube Sheet

SA-516-70 is often used for tube sheets on ASME VIII exchangers. A forging is advised for heavy wall tubesheets for the reasons given by numberfive.

RE: SA 516 Gr70 Tube Sheet

ngapulone, good idea to test for laminations before putting labor into the material. Re numberfive's point see UG-93(d)(3). Otherwise, plate is pretty widely used for tubesheets.

Regards,

Mike

RE: SA 516 Gr70 Tube Sheet

SA-105 forging not permitted for tubesheet.

RE: SA 516 Gr70 Tube Sheet

HI heatexguy, where in the code does it list material restictions for TS?

RE: SA 516 Gr70 Tube Sheet

Innovation2,

restriction on SA-105 as a tubesheet is specified in material specification SA-105 in SEction II Part A.
