A diagonal from the top plate to the roof diaphragm would adequately brace a gable end wall hinge point; so why is gable end bracing often detailed as an X?; what is the purpose of the other diagonal coming down from the diaphragm to the bottom chords since the ceiling is typically gypsum and not relied on as a diaphragm?

I can't think of a good reason. I've never done it that way with an X.
