Certification lift for new lifting lugs

Certification lift for new lifting lugs

Certification lift for new lifting lugs

(OP)
We have a vendor welding 2 new lifting points (threaded) onto a coupling cover for our HP steam turbine. NDE will be performed on the welds post-install.

I am trying to determine if a certification load test is required on these points - or if a test lift of the coupling cover with the crane is sufficient.

Any feedback is appreciated.

RE: Certification lift for new lifting lugs

What code are your lugs intended to comply with, ASME or ASCE?

RE: Certification lift for new lifting lugs

(OP)
ASME

RE: Certification lift for new lifting lugs

Is it a "critical lift" ?

RE: Certification lift for new lifting lugs

jt455:
Was the lifting lug designed to ASTM stds., and with an appropriate FoS? Are these lifting lugs for your own use in installing the equip.? Are these lifts only a few times in the life of the equip.? How does your company fell about the risk and their insurance to cover the same. It seems to me that some elaborate certification process is more appropriate for equipment which is going to be reused many times, or sold for use by someone else. Care in the design, detailing, welding and inspection should normally suffice for few uses.
