gland seal vs. face seal

gland seal vs. face seal

gland seal vs. face seal

(OP)
Hi-
This is probably a simple question, but can someone explain the advantage of using an o-ring gland seal as opposed to a face seal (either gasket or o-ring) for a pressurized flow connection? I think it has something to do either with the exposed surface area of the seal or in the way in which the seal is captured. I know the design tolerances for a gland seal must be held tighter than for a face seal, but for arguments sake, I'm assuming everything is designed and made perfectly.

Thanks!
