Effect of Installed LCV Upstream of a Pump Suction

Effect of Installed LCV Upstream of a Pump Suction

Effect of Installed LCV Upstream of a Pump Suction

(OP)
Dear All,

Preview: An existing flotation cell is discharging its treated water overboard a platform. The water discharge outlet is controlled by a LCV which is operated by the LT on the unit. Now, it expected that the produced water is to be transported from the platform to another produced water gathering platform for injection into the wells. I have an urge that connecting the pump suction downstream of the LCV will affect the pump operation.

Question: Please I want to know the effect the installed LCV would have on the pump operation if it is maintained at its current position?

RE: Effect of Installed LCV Upstream of a Pump Suction

It may cause the pump to cavitate. Depending on the details, it could cavitate continuously or from time to time, depending on the interaction of pump and LCV. Put LVC in discharge line of pump.

Good luck,
Latexman

RE: Effect of Installed LCV Upstream of a Pump Suction

It will depend on the discharge pressure which you have not stated.

RE: Effect of Installed LCV Upstream of a Pump Suction

You will almost certainly get cavitation. Alternately you could install a 1/4 turn full port automated block valve on suction and have it open/close with the pump start/stop. Any restriction on pump suction is a bad idea.

Thanks all for your contributions.

We have resolved to change the upstream LCV to an On/Off valve, thereby eradicating control valve operation from the pump suction.
