Tank Design

Tank Design

(OP)
Hi ,

Can anyone please help me in designing of Storage Tanks.

I am new to this subject.

RE: Tank Design

You have a very, very long way to go! What kind of tanks - above or below ground, establish a pressure, vacuum and temperature maximum and minimum, very important is what does it hold - solid/liquid/gas, etc. Then find the local, state, territory, or federal rules that govern, and the industry standards. Then use your engineering degree and most importantly get some help from an experienced designer of similar tanks.

Dear IFRs,

Thank you for your reply, its API 650 Above ground storage tank for jet fuel.

Can you please suggest me with some designer who can lift my life and take to the next step.

Thanking you well in advance.

I believe that we can help you take the next step.......

Well, ...... as far as lifting up your life....... You are on your own..

First steps in Storage Tank Design are:

- Decide upon a diameter and shell height.
- Decide upon a roof style and type of bottom
- Investigate fire protection and spacing requirements....THEN
- Design the venting system, including emetrgency vents
- Investigate foundation types, based upon the site conditions
- Size all nozzles, define manways and manway locations.
- Investigate ladders and top platforms and handrails
- Investigate paint/coatings (inside and outside)
- Specify the tank to fabricators and get bids

This is a simplified starting list....... There are many tricks to the trade.

Ensure that some MBA does not force you into building a tank in a location where it is not safe or in an aspect ratio that is too expensive.

What is the liquid, desired volume temperature and available space ? Is "double containment" required ?

What are the local Indian fire codes that must be observed ?

RE: Tank Design

Get a copy of api 650. you'll have all the design guidelines.

RE: Tank Design

where do you need this tank designed? What country? That might help is connect you with the right engineer.

RE: Tank Design

(OP)
Dear MJCronin,

we need to design this tank in UAE , and the liquid used is jet A1 FUEL.

Tank Dia: 30 m and height is 8 m .

RE: Tank Design

rajkumar....

I am just guessing here....... is this your first tank design ??

RE: Tank Design

rajcumar,
As a mechanical engineer you are not suppose to design the mentioned storage tank, except for compiling a suitable specification and datasheet, details can be found in API 650 attachments.
You are suppose to send your request (datasheet and specification) to a professional storage tank fabricator, who will be responsible for the detailed design, construction and perhaps even installation and commissioning of the storage tank. This design is way above your capabilities (no offence intended) and your country would not even consider your design for safety reasons. The design and construction has to be approved by the local authorities and you have no credentials with them, hence they won't even talk to you. They would however consider design from CBI (US) or any of big fabricators in India. Do your research for those Indian companies, they are very good and less expensive than others.
Cheers,
gr2vessels

Dear MJCronin,

yes this is the first time i am doing this.

Before this, i was in the construction of these tanks but eventhough we construct this we dont have importance as of design team, so i am very much eager in learning this.

RE: Tank Design

(OP)
Dear gr2vessels,

I know i am not supposed to do this, but learning is not an offence know.

I want to learn thats all.

RE: Tank Design

(OP)
Dear MJCronin,

now i have got an idea and designed the first shell thickness by one foot method

Tank Dia = 12

Height = 26

Design liquid height = 25.7

materail A36/ 160

td = 4.9 D (H-.3)/ Sd

= 4.9 * 12.031 * 25.7

= 9.33.

Can you please help me in designing the second shell thickness.

RE: Tank Design

When you indicate number, you should also indicate the units. That's one of the job of a design engineer.

RE: Tank Design

What joint efficiency are you using? Are you using Appendix A, Appendix M, Appendix F, etc? For the upper rings, just adjust the design liquid height.

RE: Tank Design

No no no no - Rajkumar25, I admire your thirst for knowledge, but listen to your elders, especially gr2vessels and send a data sheet to a tank design and fabrication company. Once you place an order you can then request a design report which should set out how they have designed the tank including soil conditions and foundations, wind load, seismic, thermal load, number of nozzles, internal coating, internals, type of roof, rain load etc etc. In my experience tank shells are designed with virtually no spare stress allowance at all and that is why tank nozzle loadings are normally so small. Let some one who knows what he's doing do it and then read the report and calcualtions. Don't try and learn this way - you could easily make some huge errors.

My motto: Learn something new every day

Also: There's usually a good reason why everyone does it that way

RE: Tank Design

(OP)
All are in SI Units and its joint efficiency is 1.

RE: Tank Design

I agree completely with Littleinch...

Enlist the services of an experienced design and fabrication company.... there is a large potential to make a beginners mistake.

Purchase books, learn about tank design, ask a bazillion questions to the fabricator you select.....don't do it yourself

RE: Tank Design

(OP)
Dear MJCronin,

I beleive in you and closing this thread.

RE: Tank Design

well, thanks everyone, I was actually new to the design of storage tanks therefore i want a Sample Calculation of any storage tank designed on API 620 therefore I could better Understand the design philosophy of Tanks
