Pile Cap Sub Base Preparation

Pile Cap Sub Base Preparation

(OP)
What does everyone typically specify for preparation of the sub base under a pile cap? Since the soil is not counted on for bearing support, it seems like a waste to compact it or spend alot of money improving it. There may be some cases where excavation alone will not produce a suitable surface to pour concrete on. I have seen a thin lean concrete layer specified in some cases. I would appreciate any comments or ideas.

RE: Pile Cap Sub Base Preparation

I would agree with your statement. We have specified a concrete mud mat, lean concrete would probably be an equivalent description. Pretty much it would be working slab to allow for construction of the pile cap. Good luck.

RE: Pile Cap Sub Base Preparation

Poured all my pilecaps on native material or fill over the years with no special preparation required, other than dewatering.
