How to design expansion joint?

How to design expansion joint?

(OP)
any design criteria for the expansion joint?
do 168m x 128m building need the expansion joint?
how to calculate the gap distance?
is it suitable to design the expansion joint in car park area?
can someone provide a design sample?

thanks lot

RE: How to design expansion joint?

The size is marginal for expansion joints, depending on construction; likely break it into 4 parts. Is the building heated? What is the general use and what are the materials of construction? You can put expansion joints in parkades... done all the time, but they have to be 'good' ones (aka expensive) and have to be well detailed.

RE: How to design expansion joint?

If the car park get's hit by the sun then it can expand alot. I think the best way to go is double columns at the joints so that it essentially becomes 4 slabs. Otherwise you can have a corbel joint with a slip pad (bearing pad) and have each slab supported by one another.

RE: How to design expansion joint?

I need to know were the supports are, what the building type is, what the performance expectations are, before can comment on the requirements for joints and if any number are required. There are probably a few other questions I would want answered but can't think of them at the moment.
