ASME Welding NDE Inspection

ASME Welding NDE Inspection

ASME Welding NDE Inspection

(OP)
Hi,

I was wondering if someone could help/advise with relation to the ASME IX standard. Basically I have to work to ASME IX for a particular job in which a small protective frame needs to be produced. The difficulty I am having, is specifying what the inspection/quality level requirements are for a basic fillet weld. If someone could give me some guidance as to where and how I should be specifying this I would be most grateful as I have never has to use this standard before.

Thanks in advance.

RE: ASME Welding NDE Inspection

ASME IX only gives you the rules for generating a PQR and WPS capable of producing sound welds. If I understand your question correctly you are looking for inspection criteria for the finished weldment or the weldment as it is in process. That information should come from the actual design or manufacturing code you are working to.

I agree. Section IX is not a construction code.

The information you are looking for would be found in the applicable ASME construction code, i.e., Section I, Section VIII, etc., if you were building a vessel that had to contain internal pressure or withstand external pressure. It appears that you are building something that does not contain pressure as would a boiler or unfired pressure vessel. You may be better off to consider the AWS structural welding codes or another AWS weldng standard intended for the type of structure you are building.

Best regards - Al

Thanks for your responses. I was basically after quality levels for a specified size of defect. i.e quality level 1,2,3 or B, C, D etc. I realise that the standards are orientated around pressure vessels etc, but for some reason this is what the client has specified. My understanding is that ASME bvpc standard is a pressure vessel code that has expanded to cover other areas of welding. Is this not correct?

RE: ASME Welding NDE Inspection

The customer/owner can specify any weldin standard he feels will provide the level of confidence needed provided federal, state, and locl laws are not violated.

It like buying a car. You buy the car you feel will provide te level of comfort you require, provided the price is right.

Best regards - Al

RE: ASME Welding NDE Inspection

The inspection method and defect acceptability should come from the owner of this protective frame, and not you.
