looking for a material

looking for a material

Hello,
I am looking for a material which when takes load behaves as graph attached. I would be really grateful if anyone can suggest the material.

Thanks

RE: looking for a material

How about a loose chain? Displacement continues until the slack is removed, then moves according to its modulus of elasticity.

RE: looking for a material

Of course, it is not so good on the compression side.

Looks to me like something similar to a spring - dashpot - spring in series situation...

RE: looking for a material

I could suggest a connection type that would do that, but not just a specific material.

RE: looking for a material

I think it is safe to say that no such material exists.

RE: looking for a material

The first thing that came to my mind was a loose cable (similar to BAretired's chain), but then I thought "that's a system, not a material". I agree with BAretired. I've never heard of a material that can deflect without taking load and then all of a sudden become stiff when the load hits a certain point.

RE: looking for a material

not sure what your application is, but looks like you need a slotted connection...or some kind of yet to be discovered material as mentioned above.

RE: looking for a material

Is Viagra a material?

RE: looking for a material

How about a sponge? It wouldn't offer 0 resistance, but in tension it would be very soft until the fibres were stretched out. In compression it would behave similarly until it was fully consolidated.

RE: looking for a material

A slotted connection is the only thing I can think of that will provide the tension and compression components...

Thank you all for those suggestions.

RE: looking for a material

What about good old unobtainium?

RE: looking for a material

Iron at the yield point.
