RE: How to calculate foundation thickess for conctre column

lotuslotus,

The short answer to your question is - no-one can tell you.  It all depends on the strength of the underlying soils.

If it is important that you provide a sound longterm base for your column, consult a local civil/structural/geotechnical engineer.

The bearing and shear loads are easy to design for.  But, the overturn stability requires care.  Design Considerations, the design of foundations comprise of the following stages :
1.    From the site investigation report decide upon which stratum to impose the structure load and its safe bearing pressure.
2.   Select the type of foundation, possibly comparing the suitability of several types.
3.   Design the foundation to transfer and distribute the loads from the structure to the ground. Ensure that the factor of safety against shear failure in the soil is not reached and settlement is within the allowable limits.
4.   Review & verify soils report for foundation type and   design.
5.   Soil exposed within forms is free of loose soil, soft spots, wet spots and frost.
6.   Pad width, depth and layout ____x____x____thk.
Reinforcing steel is the proper size and grade. Size: _____ Grade: _____
7.   Reinforcing steel has required clearances to ____The sides, top and bottom of forms.
